Conversation With My Son

Frisbee Golf?

After a long phone conversation with my son about a hobby he has been involved with the past two years, I decided to google it... Lately I feel like I am living under a rock, and am lost when it comes to what new technologies are out there. After looking this up and talking to hubby I find out its been around quite a while! He lives in the frisbee golf, or disc golf mecca of the United States. Due to cut backs on city parks they have turned many of them into these courses, and it has taken off.

Disc Golf is believed to be invented sometime in the 1960's (really, and where was I?) is a disc game in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, "The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.

My son, Aaron proceeds to tell me he is turning his hobby into a small business. Okay I think, and what are you planning I ask. He says he has hired a few kids to come and be caddy's for his friends birthday gathering and plans to take his business to the public. I tell him he is really reminding me of myself now. The entrepreneur fruit did not fall far from the tree. Once again his genetic traits are coming through. The funniest part of the whole conversation was I asked him how old these 'kids' were, because I am thinking six maybe seven year old? No he means seventeen he says...okay my son is only twenty one! I laugh and say I remember when he called much younger kids 'Punks' when he was seventeen...

The rest of the conversation was how his probation was over at whole foods (long story), they gave him his job back as assistant meat cutter (butcher) this past week, and is even letting him open up early mornings again (the keeper of the keys). This is how he landed in college thank goodness. Of course I did not like getting that phone call when he over slept, and they are only allowed one a year, and he already had done it three months earlier (his 21st birthday)!

He has been working two low paying jobs in low end restaurants just to make ends meat (fun pun) till he was eligible again. Six wonderful months of agony for him to think about what is important, a better life, or party time? Lessons learned the hard way? A mom knows best!

Hubby says "You can't beat his meat", and high fives him over the phone for being good enough to be a re-hire! That is definitely a man thing right there...

School is going well, his grades were mostly A's, with a B, so I am happy. He also shares that he learned his lesson, and is getting more sleep, less late nights. I told him days off are for that, and the usual mom stuff, like "When you get older you will have plenty of play time"...so I lied, what else could I do? We will take him on a nice vacation one day, and pay him back for his hard work!

I love my baby boy! Phone calls like this are why I suffered through the child birth, oh and don't forget those teenage 'kid' years!

I'm glad to hear he has that entrepreneurial spirit. So many young kids don't.

I made him come to work with me in the kitchen at an early age, and he went to work for a friend of mine at age 14 in a country club (once I saw he had the potential to slack off on his school work) to make sure he knew the value of hard work!

He seems like the sweetest kid (though I feel strange calling him a kid when I have 21 year old friends) I guess the whole 30 means you're a grown up hasn't hit me yet.

I think making sure that you're children know the value of hard work is a wonderful thing, I just hope that mine understand it and take it seriously! Glad that he got his job back!

There is a lot of stuff out there I have seen, just did not know what it was, because I was too busy raising a sick girl (14 years) who only had a small window of time to go outside at the parks...going to college and running two business in between...

There are Frisbee Golf courses in my hometown of Shreveport. Had them for about 25 years. People are always out there playing. You have a really neat son! Takes after his momma!
